Augustana Tennis advances in the NCAA tournament

TOPEKA, Kan. The Augustana women’s tennis team knocked off Southeastern Oklahoma State on Monday in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Augustana defeated the GAC champions with a score of 4-1. The Vikings, ranked No. 27 nationally by the ITA, move to a 21-3 overall record.

A quote from Coach Kurtz: This was a great win for our ladies today. The conditions were a bit rough with windy conditions, but that didn’t bother us and we came out strong. We’ve had a few good weeks outside now, so we’re more comfortable playing outside and it showed against a good Southeastern Oklahoma State team. We played strong doubles and then the ladies battled in every singles match. Gabriela got us today and now we have to get ready for Washburn tomorrow.

The Vikings will face host Washburn on Tuesday at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the National Championship Site in Orlando, Florida beginning on May 11. Tuesday marks the second straight matchup between AU and WU for the right to advance. In last year’s NCAA tournament, Washburn went 4-3. Augustana is trying to reverse the fortunes as last year the two teams met in the regular season with AU winning. This year the two teams met on February 19th with Washburn winning 4-2.
