While we’re all still admiring Lizzo’s beautiful shots at the 2023 MET Gala, former hockey pro Pernell-Karl Subban decided to make a tasteless joke about the “Special” vocal inspector on live TV earlier this week.
Subban joined ESPN analysts to discuss the fate of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs in the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Florida Panthers. When the hockey player suggested how the Maple Leafs could improve in Game 2, he said: “Maybe they need to pack a lunch the size of Lizzo. I don’t think they were ready.”
The 33-year-old former New Jersey Devil is now facing backlash from social media users for an unprovoked and fat-phobic comment. The “joke” caught many by surprise as viewers have come to Lizzo’s defense and criticized her remark.
“[Did] Pk Subban really just say “Lizzo sized lunch?” That is… not acceptable. It’s fatphobic,” said one user. Another voted“PK Subban’s random Lizzo was NOT on my bingo card tonight.”
A third user tweeted: “PK Subban is a fat phobe and the worst panelist I have ever seen in my life… pick a fight.”
While Lizzo has yet to respond to Subban, the multi-talented star has spoken out about the constant criticism of his body. He’s over it, and frankly, so are his supporters. In January, Lizzo posted an Instagram video announcing that she was “tired” of the debate about her body weight.
“Do we understand that artists are not here to fit in your beauty standards?” the 35-year-old asked. “Artists are here to make art. And this body Is art. And I’ll do what I want with this body.”
He then suggested that if critics were paid to write comments, they would realize how much time they were spending on “the wrong thing”. See below.
