Five Mustang men’s tennis players earn All-Big West honors

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. Five Cal Poly men’s tennis players earned Big West all-conference honors, the Big West announced Thursday.

In singles, junior Noah Berry he was named First Team All-Conference during his junior season Joe leather named second team all-conference.

Doubles tandem Berry and junior Fernando Fonseca and junior Colter Smith and a sophomore Bastian Weststrate earned second-team All-Big West honors.

For Berry, he has now been named First Team All-Big West individually in each of his first three seasons. He becomes the fourth player in program history to be named First Team All-Conference at least three times.

Berry finished the year with an 11-6 singles record while playing at No. 1 in the lineup. He also had the national singles ranking up to 55th this year. Berry enters her senior year with a career dual singles record of 34-17, which is fourth best in program history.

Leather earned second-team All-Big West honors after finishing 8-10 in the No. 2 seed. He won two of his last three regular season games. This is the second year in a row Leather has been named Second Team All-Conference in singles.

In doubles, Berry and Fonseca were 5-3 on the year en route to being named to the Second Team All-Big West. They won three of their last four games of the season, including over No. 39 UC Santa Barbara and Hawai’i. Last season, Berry and Fonseca were named Honorable Mention All-Big West as a pairing.

Smith and Weststrate were 4-1 on the season, all playing in the Big West while playing both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the lineup. This is the second straight year they have been named Second Team All-Big West.

UCSB’s Phillip Jordan won Big West Player of the Year, UC Davis’ Constantinos Djakouris won Big West Freshman of the Year and UCSB head coach Blake Muller was named Big West Coach of the Year to round out the top honors.

Cal Poly’s five honors matched the most of any other school.
