Well. 33 Maryland, NCAA Regional at Georgia

ATHENS, GA – This week, the Maryland women’s golf team returns to postseason play in Athens, Ga., to compete in the NCAA Regionals at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Terrapins will compete for a chance to play in the NCAA Division I Women’s National Championship at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The tournament consists of 54 holes (18 holes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) with all rounds starting at 8:00am. Players tee off in the form of tee time from holes 1 and 10. The tournament format consists of a “play five, count four” format.

“We’ve had a great week of practice and everyone is really excited to get to Athens and do our best,” the head coach said. Kelly Hovland.

This selection sends the Terps to the NCAA Regionals as a team for the first time Kelly Hovland’s tenure as head coach and the program’s sixth all-time. Patricie Mackova is playing in the regional event for the second straight season after earning an individual bid to the Albuquerque Regional just a year ago, where she tied for 25th on the University of New Mexico championship course.

Maryland enters this weekend ranked 33rd in the nation.

The regional competition features South Carolina, which is the top seed in the Athens Region, followed by No. 2 San Jose State, No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 Georgia, No. 7 Kent State, No. 8 Charleston, No. 9 Kansas, No. 10 Furman, No. 11 Augusta, No. 12 Sacred Heart and several individual picks.

The rankings are based on the teams’ ranking via Golfstat on May 1, 2023.

During the three-day tournament (May 8-10), Maryland will play on a par-72 layout designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and renovated in 2006. by Love Golf Design (Head Master Davis Love III and his brother Mark). The course has hosted the 1983, 1993 and 2013 NCAA Championships. The 2023 NCAA Regional is UGA’s third in the last 16 seasons, following the 2008 and 2017 seasons.
