TotalEnergies U17 AFCON: We don’t lose, we learn South Africa coach Crowie | TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2023

South Africa coach Duncan Crowie says the team will learn from their 5-0 loss to Senegal in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers on Wednesday.

Defeat saw Amajimbos bowed out of the tournament, and their dreams of a World Cup spot are also fading.

The spirit of the South African team is that we don’t lose, we always learn from our losses. This is a hard lesson and we will take it with us. We faced a very good team with dangerous individual players. We tried to stop them but we didn’t succeed, the coach offered.

Crowie adds; The result is disappointing for us. Nobody wants to lose 5-0. Senegal had very good physically skilled players with good speed. We were unable to respond in several cases.

The tactician says conceding two own goals in quick succession did a lot of damage to the players’ mental state and they did not recover in time for Senegal to add a third and take a 3-0 lead into the break.

I don’t blame anyone for the loss, even the players who scored their own goals. It’s part of the game and we can only choose the lessons. I’m proud of the players and everything they’ve given in this tournament, Crowie stated.

He believes that if the players have the care, they will have what it takes to take the next steps in their careers and contribute to places in the Bafana Bafana squad over the next few years.
