Softball falls twice to UC Davis on senior night

HONOLULU The University of Hawaii softball team (30-23, 13-14 Big West) dropped both ends of Friday’s Senior Night doubleheader to UC Davis (29, 20, 15-12 BW. The Aggies won the first game 6-1 and the season-ending 5-2 Rainbow Wahine at the Softball Stadium.

DH Game 1: UC Davis 6, Hawai’i 1

Unexpected heavy rains delayed the start of the game for about 15 minutes, and a couple of rain delays led to a nearly hour-long layoff as the Aggies pulled out a 6-1 win.

UC Davis scored two runs to start the game with a double steal and an RBI groundout.

In the fourth, UC Davis’ Sommer Kisling hit an RBI single to left to score runner Gia Felice, and in the fifth, Libbie McMahan’s RBI single pushed Alyssa Ito to a 4-0 lead.

UC Davis’ Anna Dethlefson hit a solo homer in the sixth to extend the Aggies’ lead to 5-0.

In the sixth, Hawai’i loaded the bases with one out. Haley Johnson hit a fielder’s choice which was swept away Clinical office at third, but drove in Amanda teaches from the third.

UH starter Key-Annah Campbell-Pua fell to 11-8 overall. He pitched the first five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and a strikeout. Millie Fidge pitched the next 1-1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout. McKenna Kostyszyn got the last two foreclosures.

UCD’s Taylor Fitgerald improved to 6-4. He pitched five shutout innings, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts. Caroline Grimes pitched the final two innings, giving up a run on one hit with a walk and four strikeouts.

DH-Game 2: UC Davis 5, Hawai’i 2

The Aggies scored two runs in the second. Delaney Diaz hit a solo home run and later, with the bases loaded and two outs, a failed fielder’s choice to shortstop Leah Polson to drive in Grace Kilday.

In the third, UH’s offense broke out for a pair of runs. Cira Bartolotti led off the frame with his fourth career home run. The opposing shot sailed over the fence in right-center field. Later with two outs Clinical office drilled a shot to right field and raced around the bases for a stand up triple. Isabella Martinez followed by a line shot single that bounced off the pitcher to center field to drive in Keliinoi for the tying run.

In the top of the fourth, the Aggies immediately got two runs back on Dethlefson’s RBI double, and later UCD loaded the bases and pinch hitter Tatum Wentworth hit an RBI single to right to score Dethlefson 4-2.

The Aggies added one final run in the sixth on an RBI fielder’s choice to extend their lead to 5-1.

UH launcher Brianna Lopez finished the season with an overall record of 16-12. He pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Liberator McKenna Kostyszyn pitched the final 1-2/3 shutout innings to close out the game.

UC Davis’ Sarah Reinman got the start and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Kennedi Brown earned the win, improving to 16-10. He threw the last four innings. He shut down the UH offense, allowing just two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

After the doubleheader, Hawai’i honored its four seniorsAmanda teaches, Cira BartolottiLepepaina “Prinsessa” Matavao and Rachel “Bueller” Sabourin.
