The Aztecs placed second at the MW Outdoor Championships

CLOVIS, California The Aztec track and field team finished the final day of the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Clovis, Calif., with a second overall team score of 143.20 and 12 podium finishes.

The 4×100 relay team consists of Aisha Watt, Jada Moore, Danae Dyerand Shaquena Foote dominated throughout the event, finishing first in 44.08, breaking the department record and becoming the fifth fastest in SDSU outdoor history.

Senior in the 1500m final Jessica Cain earned second place in 4:18.43, adding eight points to the team score.

Danae Dyer competed in the 100m hurdles and won his third consecutive Mountain West title with a PR of 13.22. The senior’s performance ranks him No. 6 all-time in Aztec outdoor history.Freshman Charlize James also had an impressive performance, finishing second and crossing the finish line just behind Dyer in 13.33. Dyer and James combined for a team-high 18 points.

In the 100m final, the Aztecs took another first and second place. Jada Moore and Aisha Watt. Moore’s performance of 11.42 earned him the Mountain West title, the Aztecs’ third in a row. Watt earned the silver medal after a PR performance of 11.57.

Alex Lomel competed in the 800m final, securing the bronze medal and setting a new PR of 2:05.36, while becoming the second fastest in SDSU outdoor history.

As for the 400m run, Shaquena Foote placed first in a personal best time of 52.57, adding ten more points to SDSU’s team total.

Rhea Hoyte represented the Aztecs in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles, where she won the Mountain West crown in 58.80 while setting a new personal best.

In the 200-meter dash finals, three Aztecs competed and earned third, fourth, and fifth place, all earning points for the team score. Aisha Watt sets a new PR with a finish of 23.38, when Jada Moore finish 23.55 and Shaquena Foote at 23:58.

In the last relay of the day, the Aztecs’ 4×400 relay team was composed Sydney Bentley, Rhea Hoyte, Aisha Wattand Shaquena Foote won his heat and finished overall with a time of 3:34.97, the 10th best in SDSU outdoor history.

Back to field events, Simone Johnson won a silver medal in the triple jump. Johnson jumped 43-03 and earned 8 points toward the team total. Dejanae Thompson also competed and set a PR with her jump of 38-08.75.

Earlier in the day, the Aztecs had two athletes compete in the discus. Felicia Crenshaw placed eighth and threw 170-8, and Erica Grotegeer threw 157-3 and was 11th overall. Crenshaw’s goal earned one point toward the team score. Second year student Jenna Fee Feyerabend it was followed by sixth place in the high jump, fresh from first place in the heptathlon on Thursday, 5-04.25.
