The Indian girls started their campaign in the Under-19 category with a win, beating Bangladesh 3-0 in the South Asian Youth Table Tennis Tournament here on Sunday.

Yashaswini Ghorpade put India in the lead when she beat Bangladesh’s Oisha Rohman in straight games at the Dorjee Khandu Indoor Stadium. Suhana Saini followed that up with another easy win over Sai Khoy Marma and Taneesha Kotecha completed the task with another straight win over Resmi Tanchangya.

Although India’s under-15 girls will not be involved in July’s Junior Asian Championship in Doha, they beat Bangladesh 3-0 and put up a big show.

Bangla, Lanka boys on the way

In the under-19 boys category, Bangladesh won the first round 3-0 to beat Maldives, while Nepal managed to take a game from Sri Lanka, who won 3-1. These victories have brought Bangladesh and Sri Lanka closer to qualifying.

In the Under-15 category, Sri Lanka boys beat Nepal 3-0 while Bangladesh beat Maldives by the same margin. However, the Sri Lankan girls won their first round match against the Maldives and Nepal defeated Bangladesh by the same margin 3-0.

When the team events of both series end on Monday, it’s up to the teams to pull up their socks and make the most of the situation.

In the morning session, Sri Lanka began the hunt for a place in earnest as their Under-19 girls defeated Bangladesh 3-0 in the first round. Divya, LS Kulappuwawadu and Nadithi Annadige were the main characters who worked for the island nation in the five-team league.

Later, Nepali girls struggled before beating Maldives 3-2 in their first round match. There was more academic interest in their results than anything else, as the competition for one of the two qualifying spots remained between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
