Jofra Archer out of Ashes after recurrence of elbow fracture | England cricket team

[ad_1]

Jofra Archer will miss a second successive summer and a second consecutive Ashes series after scans revealed a recurrence of a stress fracture in his right elbow. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the news when they cleared the squad for next months one-off Test against Ireland, where Jonny Bairstow will return after recovering from a triple leg break and take the wicketkeeper’s gloves from Ben Foakes, who has been left out altogether. .

This is the third time Archer has suffered an injury which forced him out of England’s 2019-20 tour of South Africa and returned to keep him out of the 2021 T20 World Cup and wintering out the Ashes in Australia. He then sat out last summer with a stress fracture in his lower back. Archer last played for England in July 2021 and, including a game for Surreys Second XI the previous month, has made just four appearances for the country since September 2020 due to a number of injuries.

It has been a frustrating and upsetting time for Jofra Archer, said Rob Key, CEO of ECB Men’s Cricket. He was making good progress until a recurrence of the elbow injury that kept him out for extended periods in the past. We wish him the best of luck in his recovery. I’m sure we’ll see Jofra back to his best and winning England games, whatever the format. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Jimmy Anderson has been named in the 15-man squad despite a minor groin strain that forced him out of last week’s Lancashire County Championship clash with Somerset. He will be joined by Mark Wood, who is currently on paternity leave as he awaits the birth of his first child, with Stuart Broad, Matthew Potts, Chris Woakes and Ollie Robinson providing additional seam options.

Ollie Pope has been named vice-captain, the first official since Ben Stokes was named captain last April. The timing of the announcement seems significant, given that ongoing concerns over the condition of Stokes’ left knee make him more likely to be sidelined for some, and possibly all, of Ireland’s Tests. Broad identified Pope as a potential future captain earlier this year: I think Popey is a great leader in the group, Broad said. He has grown so much in the last year, the way he operates, the trust and responsibility given to him. No doubt you can see him as a future England captain.
