RICHMOND, Va. Alden Mathes, Jared Sprague-Lott and Brock Weirather was named to the 2022-23 Academic All-District Team by College Sports Communicators, formerly CoSIDA – College Sprots Information Directors of America, the organization announced.
Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. Academic All-District honorees will advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced on June 7. Student-athletes must be a starter or key guard with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and meet statistical requirements.
Mathes graduated earlier this month with a degree in business administration, focusing on finance and marketing. In the field, the two-way athlete has a .287 average with 11 doubles, eight home runs, 32 walks, 16 hits and 35 RBIs, along with a team-leading 11 stolen bases. On the mound this season, Mathes has 18 strikeouts in 11.1 innings over nine appearances with an 0-2 record and a team-leading three saves.
Sprague-Lott, a junior politics major, paces the team in home runs (13), runs scored (55), walks (40) and on-base percentage (.457). The infielder is second in slugging (.627) and doubles (11) and third in average (.331) and hits (56). Sprague-Lott is second in the Atlantic 10 in home runs and third in walks and runs scored.
A second-year graduate student, Weirather earned a non-profit study certificate in May after receiving a certificate in human resources administration in May 2022. The Grinnell College (Iowa) alumnus will begin veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall. This season, Weirather has a 3-2 record in 13 starts for the Spiders, posting a 5.72 ERA over 72.1 innings. He has two eight-inning, seven-strikeout shutout wins this season (Siena, March 18 and St. Bonaventure, May 5).
