Keenan Reid while at New York Jets rookie camp

Keenan Reid’s recent minicamp with the New York Jets certainly left an impression. The former Rutgers football quarterback said the feeling is one he believes will be mutual with the NFL team.

Speaking about his time with the Jets last week as the rookie minicamp invitee, Reid said he was grateful for the opportunity and hopes to have another opportunity with the NFL in the near future. Reid spent the last three seasons at Rutgers as a defensive back. Before that, he played at Lincoln University, a Division II program that is a Historically Black College or University.

His path to the NFL is unusual to say the least, especially since Reid was a backup quarterback at Rutgers.He made just seven appearances at Rutgers but his strong showing at March’s Pro Day helped him take advantage of this opportunity with the Jets.

“My experience with the Jets was great, they’re a great organization from top to bottom and they carry a lot of energy,” Reid told Rutgers Wire.

I had fun working out (and) training with the team. I already knew many of the staff and the building when I was invited to their local day, but overall I did really well in training and meetings.

I talked to the coaches after the camp and they were impressed with me. At the end of our conversation, I was specifically told to stay ready. I am currently continuing to train and working with my agent to see what is the best opportunity for me to move forward.

At the Rutgers Pro Day in March, Reid was impressive. A 40-inch vertical opened some eyes, as did very strong times in the 3-cone shuttle (7:15) and a 4:21 time in the 20-yard shuttle.

But it was his straight-line speed that got the Jets’ attention. His first run of 40 saw Reid read 4.5. He then ran a 4.41, the fastest Rutgers athlete of the day.

According to Reid, the Jets’ feedback from his three days at the team facility was positive.

They were impressed with me. The coaches not only talked about how smart I was (and) competed in the meets, but were impressed with how I was able to take these meets and techniques and go right out on the field and execute at a high level. The setup was new for everyone, so a lot of practice was simply getting acclimated quickly and adjusting to the new system, Reid said.
