NCAA M. Tennis Championship draws announced

TROY, NY – The NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Committee has announced the draw for the 2023 singles tournament featuring a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athleteAiden Drover-Mattinen. Action begins Thursday morning at the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) National Campus in Orlando.

Sophomore Drover-Mattinen (Portugal Cove – St. Philips, NL / Blyth Academy) will face Ramon Vilarroig Martinez, a junior from North Central College (Ill.), beginning at 9:00 a.m. The winner will advance to the second round at 1:00 p.m. against the matchup winner Abhi Ramireddy, a senior from Washington University of St. Louis, or Tristan Bradley, a junior from Bowdoin College. Bradley is the No. 2 seed in the 32-person field.

In 34 singles matches in 2022-23, Drover-Mattis has a 27-7 record, including 14-2 in tournaments and 13-5 in duals, all at No. 1.

He went 4-0 in A Flight’s season-opening Siena Invitational and then played in the semifinals of the Middlebury Invitational in late September. Drover-Mattinen won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals (6-0) and advanced to the national ITA Cup, where she was the top seed. A pair of wins earned him All-America status before he lost to Bradley in the semifinals.

The spring semester has featured only dual meets, including the Liberty League Tournament, where Drover-Mattinen, a six-time Liberty League Player of the Week, went 2-0 to lead the Engineers to their second straight title and another automatic bid to the NCAA. Tournament. RPI defeated Lebanon Valley College in the first round (5-0) before losing to Johns Hopkins University in the second (5-0).

Last season at the NCAA Championships, Drover-Mattinen won her first-round match 7-6 (4), 4-1 (ret.) before losing in the second round 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to the eventual champion. He also played one round in doubles.
