Havre High Tennis begins the postseason at Divisionals

The Havre High tennis teams begin the season this week with the Eastern A Division in Lewistown. As the Blue Ponies compete in their biggest meet of the season, HHS head coach Jeff Miller is excited to see them compete.

I think everyone just wants to go because they know that if they play that well, they’ll have a lot of success. I think that’s just the main part of it, Miller said. Some of our more experienced kids want to make it to state and possibly place at state. And I think our kids are more or less there to get a few points in the division and hopefully get a few wins.

In the divisions, the ponies face many familiar opponents. Over the next few days, the Ponies will face players from Glendive, Lewistown and Sidney. However, Miller expects Miles City to be their toughest opponent on both the boys and girls side.

With the Havres’ top players advancing to the state meet, they will try to give their best this week. In boys singles, Carter Spangler looks to be coming off a strong start to the season after a strong season. Callen Stoner will also compete in singles and is aiming for a spot at the state meet.

The Ponies will also look for success in boys doubles this week. The doubles team of Reid Kato and Conner McKay looks to be doing well this week. The doubles team of Max Spangler and Jackson Headdress has also had a strong season that they hope to continue in the divisions.

In her final year with the Ponies, Rayna Johnson is looking to qualify for state in girls singles. In girls doubles, the senior tandem of Courtney Burchard and Cat Kaftan has had a strong season and looks to start its final postseason strong.

After several months of strong play for the Ponies, it is now time for them to play at their best. Miller believes the Ponies just need to stay the course this week, with spots at next week’s state meet in Missoula on the line.

I think everybody just has to play the way they can, Miller said. I think as long as we go out there and play well, we’ll have a lot of success.

The HHS tennis teams begin Eastern A Division play today in Lewistown. It will continue for the next few days until Friday.
