SCOTTSDALE — Sun Devil Baseball couldn’t shake off an inauspicious opening frame as ASU fell to rival Arizona 12-3 in the opener of the 2023 Pac-12 Baseball Tournament.
Arizona scored four runs on just the first two hits. A theme that carried throughout the day as ASU walked 10 Wildcat batters — including five in the fourth inning that effectively put the game away when the Sun Devils fell to nine. -0 holes.
Six Wildcat relievers who drew walks scored and one who reached base on a hit.
Jacob Tobias, Isaiah Jackson and Luke Hill each had two hts and Jonny Weaver was a pinch hitter with two RBI doubles.
The Sun Devils have the day off before playing second-ranked Oregon State at 10 a.m. AZT Tuesday at Scottsdale Stadium. ASU will need to win a game and get help from other pods to reach the tournament semifinals, and will likely need to win the contest to strengthen its chances of an at-large bid in the NCAA postseason.
