Ireland have named a strong 15-man squad for next month’s crucial 10-team 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe.
Andrew Balbirnie will lead a strong Irish side full of pacemen in a 2023 Cricket World Cup qualifier in Zimbabwe that would see two teams qualify for the main event in India later this year.
The qualifiers will begin on June 18 and will see ten teams, including West Indies and Sri Lanka, vying for two spots.
The Irish team has several pace options: Mark Adair, Josh Little, Craig Young, Barry McCarthy, Graham Hume and Curtis Campher. But given the circumstances, they have also decided to go with Ben White, who recently made his Test debut in Bangladesh.
“We were going into a big couple of months and we were looking at what personnel we needed from a tactical point of view, who were fit and the squad composition that suited the conditions we were likely to face,” Andrew White, Ireland men’s team. I chose, said.
“For example, in the latter stages of the tournament, we’re likely to be playing on used pitches, so we’ll see Ben White’s value come to the fore.”
“But before we look too far ahead, we need to start well and put together what we think is our best team to meet this challenge. With a seam attack of Adair, Little, Young, McCarthy, Hume and Campher we feel we are on our way. Towards our best attack once again, while PJ Moors experience in Zimbabwean conditions and his versatility in batting 1-7 will provide us with great cover.”
Moor has already played Test cricket for Ireland since moving from Zimbabwe, but is yet to play his ODI for them, with his last 50-over international coming in 2019 for Zimbabwe.
Stephen Doheny will be left out of the squad after recently playing in the series against Zimbabwe earlier this year.
“Qualifiers are tough contests at times and a balance of talent, form and experience is essential,” White stressed.
“We believe we have achieved that and I know the Irish supporters are right behind the players and staff in their quest to qualify for the World Cup.”
Irish team: Andrew Balbirnie (c), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Graham Hume, Josh Little, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy, PJ Moor, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Ben White, Craig Young.
