Kitsap players earn multiple medals at state tennis tournaments

Bremerton tennis had a very successful state tournament with two of its doubles teams reaching the semifinals.

The Knights’ boys’ doubles team of Jackson Warner and Nicho Crowley-Koehler advanced to the semifinals on day one. In their first match, they fought in three sets and won 5-7, 7-5, 7-5. The duo calmed down in the second round, winning 6-1, 6-4. On the second day, the Knights duo lost in the semi-finals and finished sixth.

On the girls’ side, Claire Warthen and Elena Andreu also reached the semi-finals. They won the first round 6-1, 6-2 and the second round 6-2, 6-4. On the second day, the Knights tandem lost in the semifinals and finished sixth.

North Kitsap also had a strong outing.

Teegan Devries had an impressive performance in singles. On the first day, he made it to the semifinals after going two sets in both matches and dropping just a few games in total. Devries started the second day against District 3 champion Taraneh Khaligh and lost to her for the second time this season in straight sets. She fell to Sequim’s Kendall Hastings to finish sixth in the state.

Viking Indigo Gallagher-Zapf won her first match in two sets, but dropped her second match on the first day. On the second day, he battled through the consolation bracket and finished seventh in the state. North Kitsap’s final singles player was alternate Dayshawn Harper.

A day before the tournament, Harper was supposed to be in a coin toss battle with a Clover Park boy for the last spot in the state. However, he chose to face and beat the Clover Park player to earn the final spot. He faced the No. 1 Zach Chai and showed that he can belong, losing 7-5, 6-2. Harper won his next two consolation matches in straight sets. On the second day, he fought for fifth place.

The Vikings’ Ethan Gillespie and Mason Chmielewski won their first match and lost their second on the first day. On the second day, the duo recovered and won the consolation semifinals. They finished fourth. Spencer Gillespie and Justin Gallant won their first set but dropped both matches on the first day.

Bainbridge, Central Kitsap and Olympic schools each had one tennis player. Spartan Brogan Rice played in one of the hose matches to start the 3A state tournament. Unfortunately, he was swept and ended his tournament early. Cougar Kai Junior went 0-2 and was swept in both games.

Olympian Bailey Walton struggled in her first match to lead early. However, Walton won his second match on the first day. On the second day, he lost his first match and did not place.

Bremerton’s doubles team of Jackson Warner and Nicho Crowley-Koehler also placed sixth.
