Table tennis: Africa learns from Chinese and Japanese technology

The World Table Tennis Championships ended on Sunday, May 28 at the International Convention Center (ICC) in Durban, South Africa.

The vice president of the African Table Tennis Federation, Wahid Oshodi, has revealed that they are working with the Chinese and Japanese to learn the technicalities of improving table tennis in Africa.

Oshodi disclosed this after South Africa successfully hosted the World Table Tennis Championships for the first time in 84 years.

China dominates the world table tennis championship

China’s Fan Zhendong retained his men’s title after successfully defending the St. Bride Vase by defeating Wang Chuqin 4-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10, 11-13, 11-3). )

In women’s singles, China’s Sun Yingsha also took the title by beating Chen Meng 4-2 (5-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6).

To Africa to learn technical things from the Chinese and Japanese

The ITTF Vice President (Governance, Communications, Protocol & World Ranking) disclosed that there is talent in Africa that needs to be given technical support to become world champions.

He added that the performance of African giants Omar Assari and Quadri Aruna at the championships inspired the young players.

He said: “We work with the Chinese and the Japanese because their technology is superior in any country and we need to learn from them how they get kids playing at a younger age, but there is no doubt the talent is here in Africa.

“Omar Assar getting to the quarterfinals and Quadri Aruna’s performance gives hope to the younger ones, more talented and skilled at a younger age and able to do more and better with our support and the results are starting to come.”

Organizing the world championships will have a positive effect on the continent

The former chairman of the Nigerian Olympic Committee added that Africa has successfully hosted the historic World Cup.

He further said that hosting has a big impact on the continent.

South Africa will host the first World Cup in 84 years.

He said: “It’s very important for us to host the World Cup, Africa hasn’t had it for a long time in 84 years and people have believed that we don’t have the infrastructure in Africa. It’s a great championship with a lot of flavor and we’re very proud that we could to do it this way.

“Hosting the World Cup will have a positive impact on the continent, we’ve seen young players coming across the continent and it gives a better focus on what we need to put together, they’ve seen top players here in South Africa and that encourages them.”

Africa will host the second world table tennis event dubbed the WTT Contender Lagos 2023 at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos from the 12th to the 18th. June.
