Many sports have a time limit, which means fans know how long the event will last. This is true in football, basketball, American football and boxing, give or take unforeseen circumstances.

However, there are others, such as baseball or tennis, where the show only ends when there is a winner. But in racket sports it may take several hours to see the winner announced.

In the early 1950s James H. Van AlenAmerican philanthropist and founder of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport Casino – the world’s largest tennis museum – proposed a tiebreak solve the problem of long matches.

What is a super tiebreak?

A super tiebreak is just like any other tiebreak in tennis, but it is played 10 points instead of the usual seven. Because of this, super tiebreaks are also known as 10 point semi-finals.

For male singles, this happens when there is a tie during the fifth setand the women’s and doubles tied in the third set.

Standard tiebreak

Although the tiebreak is played first to seven, it is officially called a 12-point tiebreak because it is the best of 12 points won by two (7-5).

Winning this tiebreaker makes the set game 7-6, and the player wins the set in seven games. However, long tiebreaks can occur after 12 points if neither player is down can win by two points.

Serving rules during the super tiebreak

Technically, when a super tiebreak is played during the last set, the previous order of service remains.

The first player or team to serve serves as tiebreakers for the first point. The opposing player or team then serves the next two points. After this, each player or team does alternately serve two points until the super tiebreaker ends.

Scoring and exchange ends with a super tiebreak

As for scoring, points are awarded during the super draw has the same weight as in a regular tiebreak. The first player or team to make it 10 points with a two point lead win the whole match. If a 10-point tie occurs during the super tiebreak, the match will always continue a a two-point lead has been achieved.

Another special rule during super tiebreaks is when players can change the heads of the court. The exchange of players or teams ends after the first point. Then that occurs every six dots.

Another option for changing ends is to change after the first stitch and then after every four points. This is more beneficial for the players, especially when the tennis match is played outdoors and there are bad weather conditions.

In addition, no rest breaks are allowed during super tiebreaks. For this reason, players take the opportunity to drink water and recharge while changing heads.

How the tiebreak system was implemented in the Majors

Tournaments like US Open and Wimbledon handled tiebreaks differently than regular season games. But from March 2022 the governing body of the most prestigious sporting events (Grand Slam Board) said that all four tennis Grand Slams would use a super tiebreak (a 10-point tiebreak) in the final set at trial, which started at the 2022 French Open.

I saw the most important tournaments treated Sudden Deaths Roland Garros until 2022:

  • Australian Open: In the first Grand Slam of the calendar, singles players used super tiebreak, when the result of the game in the last set of the singles match was 6-6.
  • French Open: Until 2022, the Paris tournament was the only Major that did not use sudden death to determine the winner in the final round of singles play.
  • We are open: In New York, players used a 12-point draw if the score was 6-6 in the final set.
  • Wimbledon: At the All England Club, competitors had to win the final set in two games. However, in 2019, Wimbledon introduced a tiebreak in the final set if both players reach a 6-6 match.
