PARIS (AP) French Open tennis player Miyu Kato lost all 21,500 euros (about $23,000) in prize money and ranking points in the women’s doubles because he accidentally hit the ball girl in the neck with the ball after a point during the match, but he may continue to participate in the mixed doubles game.
Kato’s partner in the women’s doubles, Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi, got her money and points for reaching the third round in that competition.
French Open referee Remy Azemar decided on penalty kicks. Azemar ruled that the ball boy hit by accident and Kato was allowed to continue in mixed doubles with Tim Ptz; they are scheduled to play in the semifinals on Thursday.
In the third round of the women’s doubles on Sunday, Kato lobbed the bat and the ball flew toward the ballboy, who did not look in the direction of the Japanese players while off the court.
At first, referee Alexandre Juge only gave Kato a warning. But after Azemar and Grand Slam supervisor Wayne McEwen went to Court 14 to investigate what was going on, Kato and Sutjiadi missed the match.
This made Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain the winners.
