LSU Track & Fields Men’s 4th NCAA Outdoor Championships – LSU

AUSTIN, Texas The LSU men’s track and field team closed out the season at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Stadium in Austin, Texas.

LSU’s men finished fourth at the NCAA Championships with 43 points. This marked the 25th^th at the NCAA Outdoor Championship that the Tigers finished in the top 10.

The day started as dramatically as possible. LSU’s 4×100-meter relay team of Brandon Hicklin, Dorian Camel, DaMarcus Fleming and Godson Oghenebrume looked set to take second in the race with a time of 38.05 seconds. Texas Tech’s time was 37.93 seconds, but not without a bad exchange in the first zone, giving Tech the DQ and LSU the gold.

Although the finals were tight, it would be hard to deny that this LSU team is the greatest 4×100 team in college history. The team finished the season as NCAA and SEC champions, winning all their contests cleanly. They ran four top-10 times in the world, five top-10 times in collegiate history and seven top-10 PL times in the country this season. They also hold the college and LSU record time of 37.90 seconds, which they recorded in Bernie Moore at the SEC Championships. On top of that, all four members are in LSU’s all-time top 10 in the 100 meters outdoors after this week’s meet.

LSU’s top 10 in the 100 meters took another hit for the second time this week. Oghenebrume took silver just 0.01 out of gold with a time of 9.90 seconds. The time of 9.90 ranks second in LSU history, bettering his second-place finish by 0.03 and third in Nigerian history. Not far behind in fourth place was Fleming with a time of 9:97, which improved on his PR of 10:01 set on Wednesday. Fleming is now third in LSU history behind Richard Torpedo Thompson (9.89) and Oghenebrume. The Fridays 100 final is considered the fastest in college history, being the only one ever to have seven sub-10 clocks.

The pride of Chile, Claudio Romero, finished fourth in the discus throw with the season’s best throw of 62.67 meters (205 7). His throws improved his command for third on LSU’s all-time list. His goal earned him his third First Team All-American honor.
