The robber who stole tennis star Kyrgios’ Tesla Model X pleads not guilty

The robber who stole the Tesla Model X belonging to tennis star Nick Kyrgios pleaded not guilty earlier this week.

In early May, Kyrgios parked his Tesla Model X at his home in his native Australia, the city of Canberra. However, a masked man identifying himself as “Chris” pointed a firearm at Kyrgios’ mother and demanded she hand over the key card to the lime green Model X SUV.

“Chris” needed help starting the car and drove along.

However, Kyrgios controlled the Tesla’s top speed on his smartphone app, allowing it to only go 80 km/h, or about 50 MPH.

The location of the vehicle and speed limits set by Kyrgios helped the police find the vehicle on a suburban street. The carjacker was eventually restrained by police and charged with several counts including aggravated robbery, operating a vehicle without a license, failure to stop for police, driving while stopped and resisting an officer.

He was refused bail.

“Chris” is not being identified by his real name for legal reasons. Earlier this week, however, he announced his innocence. The 32-year-old appeared in court earlier this week via phone link Caretaker, but a pretrial hearing is July 18.
