Loughborough Lightning won their second Netball Super League title in three years after fighting back against London Pulse; Sam Bird’s side finished top of the table in the regular season but were unable to hold on to their early lead in the team’s first Grand Final

London Pulse head coach Sam Bird says his players are “devastated” to miss out on the Netball Super League final after losing to Loughborough Lightning.

The Pulse led by four goals after the first quarter, but the Lightning’s Mary Cholhok began to turn things around when she tied the score at 35-35 early in the third quarter.

Vic Burgess’ side used that momentum to extend their lead and win 58-47 to deny the Pulse a maiden Super League title at the Copper Box Arena.

“I thought we had an incredible first half. I thought the Lightning had to play their best netball to beat us. I think we made them do their best of the season,” Bird said. Sky Sports.

“Obviously we’re upset not to win, but there are so many positives to come from that performance and we’ll see what else we can bring. I’m really proud of the team.”

“Let’s hope so. We also respect the opposition. We know everyone is trying to recruit a stronger list, as are we, but I think we have the depth and talent in London to come through and challenge for the title next year.”

Williams “admires” the Lightning’s performance

Fran Williams was key to the Lightning’s turnaround as she had six steals and eight turnovers that changed the momentum of the match.

“Then the way we came out, our backs made it so much easier. I’m just so proud. There’s so much that’s happened at this club, you wouldn’t even know. There’s so many journeys, I’m just so proud of this.”
