Nottingham strikes: More important things than tennis, says Andy Murray

Andy Murray says there are “more important things than tennis” after three people were killed and three others injured in attacks in Nottingham.

Murray said he did not know whether play would be suspended at the Nottingham Open, but it went ahead with the Briton winning his first-round match.

“It was obviously shocking when I woke up this morning,” said Murray, 36.

“While I was going to breakfast, there were a few messages in our team chat.

“We’re in the city center and we’d been out for dinner last night and were walking around those areas. You never expect something like that to happen.”

The three-time Grand Slam champion added: “Very shocking and obviously heartbreaking for the victims and those involved.

“We talked about it this morning and said we didn’t know if the tournament would be suspended for today because there are much more important things than the tennis event.”

A 31-year-old man was beaten by police before being arrested on suspicion of murder after the attacks began at 04:00 BST on Tuesday.

Murray, who won the Surbiton Trophy on Sunday and is preparing for Wimbledon, deserved a nice one Victory over Belgium’s Joris de Loore 6-3 6-4.
