Flyers add ‘elite hockey mind’ to Patrick Sharp’s staff – NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Flyers added a name to their hockey operations department on Tuesday, bringing in a familiar name.

The club hired Patrick Sharp as a special ice hockey advisor. The 41-year-old is involved in all aspects of the department and strongly focuses on developing future prospects.

“I am proud to announce the addition of Patrick Sharp to our hockey team,” Flyers general manager Danny Briere said in a statement released by the team. Patrick is an established veteran on and off the ice and his unparalleled hockey knowledge is a valuable asset to our organization and our young prospects.

As a player, Sharp won three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks and scored more than 30 goals four times in Chicago.

His career with the Blackhawks began when the Flyers traded the winger to Chicago in December 2005. They dealt him and Eric Meloche in exchange for Matt Ellison and a 2006 third-round pick.

Drafted by the Flyers in the third round of the 2001 draft, Sharp played 66 regular season games in Philadelphia and won the 2005 Calder Cup with the AHL affiliate Phantoms.

He earned his first Stanley Cup ring in 2010 when the Blackhawks beat the Briere and Flyers.

“With the addition of Patrick Sharp to our group, we gain an individual with a wealth of knowledge in building a winning environment at all levels,” Flyers director of hockey operations Keith Jones said in a statement released by the team. Patrick knows what it takes to win, he understands how to convey that to our players and he is a relationship builder. He will be an important component as we continue to build the foundation of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Over the past five seasons, Sharp had worked in broadcast roles with NBC Sports and NBC Sports Chicago. As of September 2021, he had also served as a coaching advisor at Vermont, where he played his college hockey.

“Our staff feels the same way about Patrick’s next steps as a hockey leader,” Catamounts head coach Todd Woodcroft told NBC Sports Philadelphia on Tuesday. After returning to UVM to help us as a coaching advisor, Patrick was coming home to the place where he began his college career. Now he’s once again returning to the place he made better, and it affected him Patrick is returning to his first NHL team.

Patrick is a hard-working, hard-working, man of character who helped UVM for two seasons as a volunteer. He helped us in player development with his elite hockey mind and he helped our coaches by always pushing us to push our limits. He is an extraordinary man with a huge future ahead of him. We thank him for all he has done for UVM and are excited to see him develop professionally.
