Oregon State football player Brandon Smith was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

Brandon Smith, a junior college counselor who announced his commitment to Oregon State in early June, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Smith, a RB from Santa Barbara City College in California, was one of four people arrested in connection with the June 2 incident.

Earlier in the day, Smith had announced his commitment to the Beavers football program.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said Smith, 21, was arrested June 7 and is being held on $2 million, according to ESPN.

Oregon State University told ESPN that Smith had never even signed with the team, so he is not part of the program.

A native of Chicago, Smith ran for 1,231 yards and 16 touchdowns in his final season with the Vaqueros of Santa Barbara City College – who compete in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA).

The coach took an official visit to Corvallis, OR in late May and announced that Oregon State had offered him a scholarship on May 25th.

ESPN reports that Smith also received interest from other FBS schools, including Fresno State, Nevada and Hawai’i.

Hours after Smith announced his engagement on social media, Santa Barbara Cty. Detectives responded to reports of a fight near a community pool – where they found a 20-year-old with serious injuries.

All four suspects arrested in connection with the case were charged with attempted murder, robbery and conspiracy.
