Texas football has a “legitimate shot” with 5-star WR target Ryan Wingo

All the headlines surrounding the Texas football program and head coach Steve Sarkisian right now are about what’s happening on the recruiting trail. Texas picked up its fourth commitment in the 2024 recruiting class on June 17 with highly touted four-star cornerback Santana Wilson from Scottsdale (AZ) Desert Mountain.

Sark and the Longhorns staff are wrapping up the first big official visit weekend of June, which began on June 16. Wilson was one of the big official visitors on campus this weekend from the 16th to the 18th. June.

And one of the highest-rated official visitors to get on campus for an official visit this weekend is St. Louis University (MO) elite five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo. Texas will host Wingo for a visit this weekend for the first time since he made an unofficial trip to the first Junior Day of the offseason on Jan. 21.

Texas and new wide receivers coach Chris Jackson had a growing confidence in his position in this recruiting heading into Wingo’s official visit to Austin.

Jackson and the Longhorns had to strike this weekend with Wingo to make a big move on Missouri’s elite wide receiver. The early returns from Wingo’s first 36 hours on his official visit to Texas sound pretty promising.

Inside Texas reports on the morning of June 18 (paid content) that Texas feels like it has “qualification here” in the final stages of Wingo’s official trip this weekend.

Additionally, Texas made it clear this weekend that Wingo was one of the top out-of-state priorities among official visitors on campus. Texas linked Wingo with the No. 1 ranked recruit in the class of 2023 and true freshman quarterback Arch Manning for a good while during his official visit.

It’s worth noting that Wingo’s first unofficial visit to Texas came last offseason when Arch made an official visit to Austin (the weekend of June 18, 2022). Sark and the Longhorns staff engineered all of this to impress upon Wingo that Texas is the place for him to maximize his insane talent at the college level.

Wingo has mentioned over the past year that playing in a winning program where he has elite talent around him along with his teammates are big factors in his recruitment. Sark and the Longhorns know that and now hit the nail on the head, connecting Wingo with Arch in multiple visits.

Texas seems to have gained some ground with Wingo

Texas came into this official visit weekend with Wingo looking to make a big move, and the Georgia Bulldogs look to be the leader in the race to land his commitment. And it sounds like Texas did enough to experiment with Wingo before he wraps up the rest of his official visits.

Georgia made a big impression on Wingo during his official visit to Athens on June 2. He also saw the Michigan Wolverines on his official visit last weekend. The final official to be with Wingo this month will see Columbia and the state Mizzou Tigers starting on June 23rd.

Wingo appears to be Texas’ top priority among outside wide receivers in the 2024 class this summer. Texas pulled it off this weekend by putting itself in a position to have a real shot at recruiting that could stretch into the fall.
