Public input is being sought on the future of the world’s largest hockey stick

The Cowichan Valley Regional District has begun public engagement to determine the future of the world’s largest hockey rink. The Cowichan Community Center is a 205-foot wooden replica.

The world’s largest hockey stick is nearing the end of its useful life.

First constructed for Expo 1986 in Vancouver, the building has been a prominent landmark in the Cowichan area for the past 35 years.

Constant maintenance and extensive repairs in the early 2000s have extended its life, but the stick’s glulam-Douglas fir construction shows advanced decay.

In 2022, CVRD used qualified consultants to evaluate the rod, and the results of their work indicate that CVRD should be ready to replace by 2025.

“We have a good idea of ​​the amount of work required to replace the pole, but we don’t fully understand the intrinsic value of it by residents and the overall community support for a potential replacement,” said Rob Williams, Cowichan Community Director. Center.

Over the summer, we will gather and evaluate feedback from the community to determine the future of this iconic structure.

CVRD staff has presented several options for consideration for the future of WLHS, including replacing the cane with a similar or different design and materials, keeping it the same size or larger, or removing the cane and not replacing it altogether.

These options are likely to have varying levels of public support, and the CVRD hopes to receive a wide range of input from residents to help make this important decision.

The survey is now available at CVRD Plan Cowichan websiteand is open to anyone who wishes to participate.

There is no registration required to complete the survey, but the CVRD encourages residents to create a Plan Your Cowichan account to participate in and learn about other ongoing and future projects.
