Michigan football isn’t quite the undisputed best team in the Big Ten, but it’s close.
After winning two straight Big Ten championships and two straight against a rival Ohio Statemost pundits and credits are starting to see the Wolverines as the best team in the conference, but there is room for debate with the Buckeyes as well Penn State.
The preseason polls haven’t been released, so we’ll soon get a better idea of what the majority of the media thinks about the maize and blue and scarlet and gray. But in the meantime, we have an idea of what at least one opposing coach thinks about Michigan football.
We speak to Athlon Sports for its annual preview magazinean unnamed Big Ten assistant coach shared his thoughts on what the Wolverines bring to the table.
“Last season really sealed it for them. This is a different program. The gap between them and Ohio State hasn’t been this close in decades. … It’s reloading, not rebuilding, which they’ve never been able to claim like Ohio State or an SEC team. Transfers are good, the backfield is great, the QB is great, they have speed on the edges and on defense they are consistent and smart.
It’s a proof of concept now, that’s why they’ve stepped it up in recruiting. Jim (Harbaugh) has also found a niche inside the portal. They grow a culture for those guys. It’s elitist, but it’s based on confidence, and confident teams are consistent.
… The only thing they’re missing right now is that “big” win at the national championship level. There’s no reason they should have lost to TCU, and they certainly know it, but they didn’t do anything crazy in response. And remember, Jim is a distraction, but not to Jim. At the top, it’s a calm, coherent culture.”
We agree that Michigan should not have lost to TCU. It had a great opportunity to not only reach the national championship game, but to potentially contend Georgia for college football’s most coveted trophy. Now, however, the Wolverines must implement new plans to overcome their postseason woes now that they’ve gotten over their competition woes.
