Warsaw, Poland — Polish authorities have arrested a Russian ice hockey player who competed in Poland’s top league on suspicion of espionage, authorities said Friday.
Russian spies fall one by one! said Zbigniew Ziobro, Minister of Justice and Chief Prosecutor. A spy acting under the guise of an athlete was caught.
According to Ziobro, the suspect was the 14th member of the spy network arrested in a NATO country.
According to the National Prosecutor’s Office, the man arrested on June 11 was accused of participating in the activities of an organized criminal group and acting on behalf of a foreign intelligence service against Poland’s interests. Such acts can be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
The suspect regularly passed on information about the results of intelligence operations, for which he was regularly paid, the Special Services Office of the State Cabinet announced.
The statement said the spy group was used by the Russians for intelligence activities, including monitoring railways and spreading propaganda targeting NATO and Poland.
The suspects also prepared acts of sabotage ordered by the Russian intelligence service. The entire ring was paid for tasks performed, it said.
Poland is an important hub for Western weapons going to Ukraine to support its fight against Russian aggression.
