ICELAND TABLE TENNIS TEAM HIGH HOPES FOR MEDALS – Island Echo

The Isle of Wight is taking an 8-strong table tennis team to the Island Games in Guernsey in the hope of medals.

As previously reportedIsland Echothe island takes a 4-member men’s and 4-member women’s team – coached by Glen Morley.

The Isle of Wight has been very successful in table tennis at the Island Games, and only the Swedish island of Gotland has won more gold medals in the history of the Games.

Dan Burns, a 9-time gold medalist and part of the team that dominated the field from 1995-2003, returns as both a player and team manager. She is hoping history repeats itself since the last time the Games were held in Guernsey in 2003, when the Isle of Wight won gold in every event except the women’s doubles.

Speaking last August, he played down hopes of a team gold medal, saying:

“We like the outside team medals, but we will definitely give it our best.”

However, he emphasized the possibilities of George Downing, who played professional table tennis abroad, and is considered the island’s most likely medal hope.

He is by far our strongest player and a wonderful addition to the team. He has a real shot at a gold medal if he plays to the best of his abilities.

Table tennis action is played every day at the Hougue du Pommier, with medals awarded except on the opening day.
