England skipper Ben Stokes (155) chases down a fearsome 371 to win by 327 after battling for a century. But tempers flared before Carey dismissed Bairstow in dismay.
The incident happened when Bairstow bowled Cameron Green over the last ball. Assuming the ball was dead, Bairstow left his crease to have a chat with non-striker Ben Stokes. But after collecting the ball, Carey threw down the stumps with Bairstow out of his crease.
The dismissal led to the “spirit of cricket” debate. However, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin thought it was smart cricket by Carey.
Quoting a fan’s tweet that mentioned how Ashwin was criticized for dismissing Jos Buttler in the IPL by removing the stumps while bowling, Ashwin wrote: “We need to get one point out loud and clear. A keeper should never dip into the stumps. far in a Test match unless he or his team are observed a pattern where the batsman leaves his crease when leaving the ball, as Bairstow did.”
“We need to praise the intelligence of an individual’s game instead of tipping it towards unfair play or the spirit of the game,” Ashwin’s tweet further read.
The third Test starts on July 6 at Headingley.
