Flyers emphasizing player development, not roster spots in camp

The purpose of the Philadelphia Flyers development camp might not be what you think.

Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere said the young players are excited about developing their game, not necessarily securing a spot.

The 2023-24 Flyers team is the start of a rebuild. Younger players have a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor.

For now, it’s time to sharpen those skills with these skates. The list will be made at rookie camp and training camp in September, Briere said.

It’s not so much time for me to show what they’ve got, Briere said. I think it’s more for training camp. It’s called development. More on that.

Our task is also to get to know the players a little better. But mostly it’s about them having a chance to develop their game, to feel a little bit better.

I remember my first camp when I showed up at the rink, you didn’t know anyone, you try to fit in on the road.

This will give them a chance to be around our guys, each other, the coaches and trainers and hopefully they’ll feel a little bit better. Because the real evaluation happens in training camp or September’s rookie camp.

Cooperation

Flyers’ new management team emphasizes player development. The focus is on draft picks and prospects and getting them up to speed.

Getting players back on the ice in front of the coaches and training staff can be a huge advantage. Errors can be pointed out and corrected. Training programs can be refined. There’s a camaraderie to get newcomers and prospects in one place.

We added a lot of people there [player development] to help out at the department, Briere said.

It’s something we take very seriously. Try to help these players become the best players they can be. With the addition of Patrick Sharp and John LeClair, they have a big say here. I’m really excited for those two guys to come on board and show what they’ve been through.

They have had an interesting career path. I had the opportunity to see John LeClair myself as a young lad in Montreal when he started out and it was not an easy road for him. Yes, he won the Stanley Cup early, but they were pretty tough on him.

He gets traded to Philadelphia and he became a superstar here, it was great to see.

Look at what Patrick Sharp has been through early in his career. I think it’s a huge experience for them to share with our young guys.

They haven’t had the cleanest and easiest path to winning Stanley Cups and becoming star players, so I think it’s great that they can share that with the young players.

The final schedule of the camp

After two days of on-ice practice at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees, the players will have on-ice practices on July 4.

On Wednesdays, the on-ice sessions continue from 9:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. The players will also participate in the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Camp Skate Tournament on Wednesday at 3:30 pm at the Penns Class of 1923 Arena in Philadelphia.

On Thursday, a five-on-five fight from 18:30 to 20:00. All sessions are open to the public.
