Major League cricket teams choose domestic wildcards

Major League Cricket’s six teams each added a tenth domestic player to their rosters following the MLC Domestic Wildcard Draft, which took place on Monday, July 3. The selections will provide domestic players with an additional opportunity to participate in the new professional cricket series in America that will be held. July 13 to July 30 in North Texas and North Carolina.

All six players drafted have played in Minor League Cricket, the premier path competition in the United States, and four wildcards have represented the US national team in international play.

The selection order continued from the MLC Domestic Player Draft held in March, when the Texas Super Kings received the first pick. The Lone Star State team picked Mohammad Mohsin, the 27-year-old leg-spinner who scored 16 runs for the Michigan Cricket Stars in the 2022 Minor League Cricket (MiLC) season. The second pick belonged to the Los Angeles Knight Riders, who selected veteran US national team left-handed batsman Gajanand Singh, who played both the 2021 and 2022 MiLC seasons with the Manhattan Yorkers.

Amila Aponso, the third pick of the San Francisco Unicorns, is going to the Bay Area team. The former Sri Lankan international played both the 2021 and 2022 seasons in the MiLC for the Atlanta Fire, taking 39 assists in 29 matches with the left-arm spinner.

MI New York added the US international to their roster, picking up right-arm quick Jasdeep Singh with the fourth pick of the draft. The New Jersey native helped lead his home state New Jersey Stallions to the 2021 MiLC season finale and has taken 28 goals with a 5.96 ERA in MiLC play.

With the fifth pick, Usman Rafiq of the Washington Freedom was selected, who made his US National Team debut in 2018 and played for the Houston Hurricanes in the 2021 and 2022 MiLC seasons. The final pick of the draft belonged to the Seattle Orcas, who added US National Team all-around player Nisarg Patel, who appeared for the Hollywood Master Blasters in the 2021 MiLC seasons. and 2022.

MLC features top international talent playing alongside America’s best in the Los Angeles Knight Riders, MI New York, San Francisco Unicorns, Seattle Orcas, Texas Super Kings and Washington Freedom. The inaugural season will be played in a round robin format, with the top four teams competing in a multi-game playoff and final round to determine the championship, which will be crowned on July 30.
