All Mitchell Marsh wanted was a chance to play one more Test in Australia. Four years had passed since his last round and another all-rounder had emerged, regarded as a great player, but he still had hope.

At Headingley, where English all-rounders have done a thing or two in Ashes Tests in the past, Marsh played an innings to go alongside them. Whether that will win Australia the match and the series with two games to go will be seen on another day, but without him they would probably have been well behind.

“This thing,” Marsh said, pointing to the baggy green. “I wanted to use it one more time and put it back on. There are always times when you spend a lot of time away from the game and you think you might not get back. It’s taken a lot of hard work.

“Really proud to be back in this team. I feel part of the team even though I haven’t played much Test cricket in the last couple of years. And I think that’s a testament to our leadership. That’s why a lot of guys have come in at different times and certain guys are playing incredibly well.”

An Ashes tour had long been in Marsh’s sights, with him opting to miss much of Australia’s last season due to ankle surgery to ensure his fitness. He now has all three Test hundreds against England, along with his solitary five-wicket haul.

“Ashes cricket is always something you want to play in as a young kid,” he said. “We’re coming for lunch today [it] was probably one of the toughest conditions I’ve been in so far in my Test career. I’m really proud of the work I’ve done mentally to overcome my nerves and get into the race as fast as possible. And I think that comes with a little bit of age, a little bit of growth and probably some time away from the game to work on certain things.”

With Cameron Green now an all-round cricketer and coming back with a full IPL, Marsh thought he would be needed, even joking that he had become the first man to score a Test hundred on “Britain’s holiday”. .

“My past experience on long Test tours is that you always get a chance at some point,” he said. “I knew Greeny was a bit sore for two days so I started to switch on a bit there. The day before the game I knew I was going to play so it was nice to have a bit of time to prepare mentally. coming back to Test cricket.”

The lively Headingley pitch also helped Marsh feel at home, allowing him to play the kind of shots he felt at home in Perth, particularly in the contest against Mark Wood, who rarely dropped below 90km/h.

“I probably just relied on my experience growing up at the WACA against fast bowling,” he said. “Swim or sink from a very early age. I think it was a great competition between him and me.

“I’ve been working a lot on the mental side of my game. People always talk about going out and playing a natural game, which isn’t always easy in Testipada. But today was as natural as it gets for me. I felt like I trusted my defense when I needed to. My technique isn’t perfect , but I know when I move well enough and make good decisions mentally that I can defend balls and keep good balls away. Outside of that, I’m going to play my shots and I was rewarded for that today.”

While many of the players still have families on tour, Marsh’s was not at Headingley at the moment with his father Geoff, having flown to Bali for his brother Shaun’s 40th birthday. Shaun posted the family’s happy celebration on social media.

“Dad had just flown back, so he was in the air when I found out I was playing,” Marsh said. “But to be honest, I don’t think he missed the 40th. It’s a lot more exciting. My whole family and all our close friends were there celebrating with Shaun, so even though they weren’t here, the video is pretty damn cool.”

Marsh remained phlegmatic about a possible return to reserves. “I wouldn’t mind going back to my UK holiday to be honest,” he said. “Greeny can come back in. But we’ll see what happens.”
