The Buffs wrapped up the USATF Championship

EUGENE, ore. Colorado had three athletes competing on Sunday’s final day of the USA Track and Field Championships at historic Hayward Field.

Former Buffaloes Sage Hurta-Klecker, Joe Klecker and Abby Nichols each competing for a chance to qualify for the upcoming USA Track and Field World Championships in Budapest, Hungry.

Hurta-Klecker was the first in Buffalo alum. He ran 2:00.65 in the 800m on Friday to qualify for Sunday’s final. Hurta-Klecker raced to the lead in the first 400 meters and hit the first split of 58.54. His pace dropped in the final 400 meters to finish in 1:02.66 to finish one point shy of a spot on Team USA for fourth (2:01.19).

Klecker, who qualified for the team in the 10K on Thursday, was looking to get his second spot on Team USA by running in the men’s 5K on Sunday. He ran in the middle of the pack early and fell to 13th in the 3,200-meter division. He would have to chase the leaders in the last half of the race and finished just outside the top three in 13:26.94.

Nichols had to wait all week for the women’s 5K race. He finished 15th after the first 400m and eighth after the 800m but was unable to maintain the momentum. Nichols pushed to the finish and finished the race in 10th place with a time of 15:27.02.

Klecker (10000m) and alumna Emma Coburn (steeplechase) will go to Budapest as part of Team USA. The World Games will take place from the 19th to the 23rd. August.
