Dutch cricketers shine globally

Sri Lanka won the Cricket World Cup qualifying tournament in a thrilling final in Harare, Zimbabwe on Sunday (July 9). The team won a great victory and defeated the Netherlands by a convincing margin of 128 runs. Although this result did not affect World Cup qualification as both Sri Lanka and Holland had already secured their places in the upcoming tournament by finishing first and second respectively in the Super Sixes stage.
A total of 10 teams participated in the tournament, which included teams from America, Nepal, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates. Unfortunately, these four teams were eliminated in the group stage. Subsequently, four other teams, including two-time champions West Indies, along with teams from Zimbabwe, Scotland and Oman, failed to secure World Cup berths at the Super Sixes stage. This is the first time that the West Indies are not participating in the ODI World Cup since their victories in 1975 and 1979.
As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the ICC Mens Cricket World Cup 2023 to be held in India, all 10 qualified teams are gearing up for the big event. While many teams participate in pre-World Cup matches, it is noteworthy that the Netherlands team does not participate in any pre-tournament matches.
Nevertheless, Dutch cricketers have left their mark globally in various cricket competitions. Several players such as Bas de Leede, Brandon Glover, Paul van Meekeren, Colin Ackermann, Timm van der Gugten, Fred Klaassen, Roelof van der Merwe and Shane Snater have been actively involved in county cricket in England. This valuable experience will provide them with match practice against some of the best players in the world, giving them the opportunity to impress the selectors and secure their place in the Netherlands squad for the upcoming World Cup.
Apart from provincial cricket, Dutch players like Bas de Leede, Roelof van der Merwe and Fred Klaassen have showcased their skills in The Hundred, an exciting T20 cricket competition in England. This platform not only provides valuable match practice, but also allows them to gain recognition and contribute to the success of their teams.
Meanwhile, Tom Cooper, Logan van Beek and Max ODowd are currently participating in the Global T20 Canada tournament in Canada. Competing against top players from around the world, they strive to further develop their skills, gain exposure and make a significant impact on their respective teams. In addition, Roelof van der Merwe will showcase his talents in the Caribbean Premier League and aim to make a name for himself and help his team succeed.
The Netherlands A team is also scheduled to play a series of matches, including two T20s against Jersey and two ODIs against Guernsey in July and August. This provides the younger players with a valuable opportunity to gain match practice and experience as well as secure a place in the Dutch team for the upcoming World Cup.
