K-State Named ITA All Academic Team, Santos Scholar Athlete

MANHATTAN, Kan.– The K-State women’s tennis team was once again named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team, where the freshman Maria Santos to earn Scholar Athlete honors on Monday (July 10).

This is the Wildcats fifth consecutive year named to the All-Academic team, ninth in the last 10 years.

“I am delighted to once again receive academic recognition for our team,” head coach Jordan Smith said. “It’s always great to get national honors with other hardworking teams and universities.”

The ITA nominated 234 Division I women’s tennis programs and 1,513 student-athletes for this year’s academic awards.

Santos, of Cortegaça, Portugal, joined the Wildcats in January 2023 prior to the spring competition. He competed in the first half of the season before being sidelined with an ankle injury. She won her first singles match on February 11, 6-3, 6-4 against Tulsa’s Amy Leather, while also winning two doubles matches.

Twelve other Big 12 teams also received All-Academic honors with a total of 71 scholar-athletes.

Last year the Wildcats had six Scholar Athletes including Florentine Dekkers, Ioana Gheorghita, Maria Linares, Rosanna Maffei, Anna Turco and Manami Ukita.

K-State earned the ITA Central Regional Community Service Award in June.

A 3.5 GPA is required for scholar-athlete honors, while a 3.2 GPA is required for the team.
