It came a day after host MacLean said he would return next season, according to longtime sportscaster and TV producer John Shannon.

Rumors had been circulating the following a report from Toronto-based blogger Howard Berger earlier this month, suggesting the winds of change could be sweeping through the hockey program.

Berger’s July 8 blog post cited an industry source as telling him: We might not recognize Hockey night in Canada panel next season.

That panel has included MacLean along with David Amber, Bieska and former pros Kelly Hrudey and Jennifer Botterill in addition to heel Elliotte Friedman.

MacLean was hired from the CBC prior to the 1986-87 season and has been a Saturday night favorite of Canadians ever since, including longtime sidekick Don Cherrys. Coaches Corner Until Cherrys firing in 2019.
