SANDPOINT The annual Sandpoint Tennis Camp returned to Travers Park this week with athletes from near and far.
A total of 29 student-athletes, mostly from Sandpoint High School, but some from Colorado and California, took the field for various practices and tournaments. Pepper Rickert won the hard court tennis tournament, the Rollers won the team tournament and Sydney Webb took home a special edition tennis racket for all her hard work.
Rising SHS freshman Pepper Rickert won the hard court tournament championship for the third year in a row on Wednesday. He defeated Carl Siegel of Denver, Colo., in an impressive, hard-fought match. Siegel is a 1-star recruit and qualified for the Colorado state championships last fall. The 29-player tournament used a tie-breaker format for each match, putting pressure on each player to attack early and limit their mistakes. Rickert was able to keep his composure long enough to beat Siegel 7-2 in the championship match.
In the team tournament, the Rollers beat the Bombers 53-50 on Thursday. Players on the winning team included: Bella Bailey, Pax Longanecker, Aubrey Knowles, Sydney Webb, Pepper Rickert, Cyrus Gayer, Hayden Mah, Mason Blaser, Porter Jensen and Jacob Dawson. Coach Kent Anderson said the Bombers always win, but this year proved to be different with the renowned Dunlop trophy in the hands of the Rollers. Sydney Webb won the most games in the team tournament and received a Dunlop Limited Edition SX 300 tennis racket.
