The Hungarian tennis player, who caused a Chinese tennis star to tearfully leave the Hungarian GP match on Tuesday, has dealt with the incident.

Disputed call: Women’s two-time Grand Slam champion Zhang Shuai decided to pull out of the match after a controversial referee’s call and an altercation with his opponent Amarissa Toth.

Zhang had earlier contested the decision by the linesman and the referee to call his cross-court shot, which appeared to hit the line, out. When Zhang sought reconsideration of the call, Toth approached the marker on the field and wiped it away with his leg, as depicted in the video recording.

Zhang immediately questioned Toth’s actions, to which the Hungarian responded dismissively, stating that the Chinese was “causing trouble”. Zhang, trailing 6-5 in the opening set, tearfully decided to withdraw from the match.

Toth replies: After the match, Zhang shared a video of the incident on social media and thanked his supporters.

Toth, who lost today to Ukraine’s Kateryna Baindli, said in her post-match interview that she respected Zhang.

I respect Zhang Shuai as a person and just as much as an athlete. It was never my intention to disrespect, upset or hurt anyone. I understand that I shouldn’t have celebrated the way I did after the match.

“Manipulative Video:” The Hungarian Grand Prix has also sparked controversy over its Facebook page’s response to online commenters.
