Spare: Ten Hag shows that he is not afraid of the captain’s decision

Raphael Varane talks about Erik ten Hag’s decision to sack Harry Maguire as Man United captain.

Manchester United have been encouraged they could still sign Harry Kane after it is believed the forward will have to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, sources have told ESPN.

Spurs owner Joe Lewis has told chairman Daniel Levy that he is not ready to let Kane leave the club for free next summer and the England captain must either sign a new deal or move this transfer window.

Kane, who has a year left on his contract, has already decided not to extend his contract, according to sources.

A deal to bring Kane to Old Trafford is still considered unlikely and Atalanta Rasmus Hojlund and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani are considered achievable targets.

Tottenham have rejected two bids from Bayern Munich, but the 29-year-old remains their top summer target.

Sources have told ESPN that United will not stretch to Spurs’ 100 million-plus valuation. While there are concerns that Kane’s salary demands may be exorbitant, they are monitoring the situation knowing that Levy will have to take offers.

Despite the difficulties of signing with Tottenham, who would prefer Kane to move abroad if he leaves, he is manager Erik ten Hag’s first choice.

Ten Hag are desperate to sign a striker before the deadline but are on a tight budget after signing Mason Mount from Chelsea and Andrew Onan From Inter.

United’s lack of strikers was highlighted in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Arsenal in New Jersey when winger Jadon Sancho was selected in the ninth.

Sancho got on the scoresheet at the MetLife Stadium, but Ten Hag believes it is imperative that another goalscorer arrives before the start of the new season.

Anthony Martial is with the team in the United States, but is not yet fit enough to train with the team.

Martial missed the FA Cup final in June with a hamstring injury and will be eased back into training when United move their camp to San Diego on Sunday.
