Basketball deserves the NABC academic honor, Wolfe does the honor justice

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The NABC has announced the recipients of the 2022-23 NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards and NABC Honors Court, which represent outstanding achievements in the classroom by men’s college basketball teams and student-athletes.

The NABC Team Academic Excellence Awards recognize men’s basketball programs that finished the 2022-23 academic year with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. The NABC Honors Court, meanwhile, includes junior, senior and sophomore men’s basketball players who finished the 2022-23 seasons with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

As a team, VMI earned recognition by meeting the 3.0 standard team GPA requirement to receive the Team Academic Excellence award.

A cadet-athlete as his name suggests, a newly graduated senior Sam Wolfe ’23 was named to the NABCHonors Court.

Wolfe qualified by a wide margin after graduating as VMI’s valedictorian for the Class of 2023, voted by his peers for graduating with a biology degree with a perfect 4.0 GPA and stellar efforts on the basketball court.

The senior from Charlotte, North Carolina saw significant playing time his senior year, finishing third on the team with the highest three-point percentage at .375. He earned two starts on the year and was instrumental in VMI’s win at The Citadel and in the home finale against Wofford last season.

By the Army, Wolfe will begin medical school this fall at Virginia Commonwealth University.
