Seedless timber will face stiff competition as they are scheduled to meet in the semi-finals of another seeded Edina team tournament at Savage Prior Lake High School. Hornets has four singles ranked in the top 10 in the state.
It’s pretty close between one or two seeds, head coach Kyle Fodness said. So we played one of the best teams in the state.
The best-seeded Wayzata will meet Duluth East in the first semi-final at 8 p.m. Rochester Mayo will then meet Mahtomed at 10 a.m. before the final semifinal between Orono and East Ridge at 2 p.m.
The semi-finals, third place matches and championship will be held on Wednesday, June 9th.
No matter how fierce the opposition is on paper, the Lumberjacks have already faced their fair share this season.
BHS (15-3) suffered two of their three losses in the regular season to Alexandria, but found a way to drop the Cardinals when it was most important. Bemidji secured his place in the state by knocking Alex 5-2 in the 8AA Team Tournament Championship last Wednesday.
Jacks also lost early in the season to Thief River Falls, but later defeated Prowlers later in the spring.
Indeed, they haven’t lost to the team yet, that they haven’t come back and hit, Fodness said. It’s really an honor for the boys. They can experience a setback, and one that motivates them to return stronger to the next.
Given that Lumberjacks has reached this stage since 1973, this year’s team seems to be making the most of the opportunity.
Every field spot is relevant, whether you’re playing a fourth or first single, said junior John McNallan. Everyone has to put in everything they have in every single match to try to win the team.
Once the team tournament is over, BHS senior Filippo Buffo will take part in individual AA singles doubles tournaments starting on Thursday, June 10th. Buffo followed the crown of the teams by grabbing the episode of the episode 8AA a day later, giving the Jacks representatives in both the team and individual state tournaments this week.
It really reflects all the boys ’hard work and how positive, flexible and mentally tough the group has been throughout the year, Fodness said. They have really done a good job of improving.
