Meet the new Makar.
Taylor Makar was one of two new UMass hockey additions announced on Tuesday along with Ryan Lautenbach.
He is the younger brother of former Hobey Baker winner Cale Makar, who now stars in the Colorado Avalanches. However, they are not mirror images.
Taylor Makar is 6-foot-3, 190-pounds ahead. Cale Makar was listed as a 6-foot, 192-pound defender.
They both played junior hockey in the Brooks Bandits at the Alberta Junior Hockey League in Canada.
We are excited to continue our relationship with the Makar family, UMass coach Greg Carvel said in a statement. Taylor is a big power striker who can play side or center. He skates very well for a big player and has good skills in addition to mobility. His style of play fits perfectly with the identity of our teams, as well as his size and level of competition.
In Brooks’ 104 matches, Makar had 61 and 17 goals. He was Captain of the Bandits in 2021 and added 19 points and five goals.
Lautenbach will come to Amherst in two years with the USHL Omaha Lancers. He scored 79 points in 103 matches. Last season, he used a C for Omaha and finished 12th in the league in scoring with 51 points.
Ryanplays with speed, toughness and jam, Carvel said in a statement. He’s the kind of player you love on your team, but you hate playing against it. Ryan plays by our identity, and it should have an immediate impact on the ice in every turn he does.
Lautenbach won the U16 championship with UMass defender Matt Kessel.
