OTTAWA – The RA Center says it will no longer offer hockey, citing the COVID-19 pandemic and the overall decline in participation nationwide.
In an email, Riverside Drive’s sports facility called the decision heartbreaking.
“We are really sad to be able to inform our RA Hockey community that COVID-19 has performed an astonishing body scan and retired the RA Hockey,” said the RA Center.
“When RA seems to be recovering from the severe effects of a pandemic, we need to make some difficult, heartbreaking decisions. As every sport facing reconstruction knows, this is very painful and unfortunate, but essential to the long-term success of the organization.”
The RA Center has been providing hockey for over 80 years.
However, according to the non-profit organization, COVID-19 has forced it to re-evaluate and rethink every aspect of the operation, adding that it has not been able to fully open for a long time during a pandemic.
“Recovery is challenging. RA is an aging institution where most areas require large capital investments and its operating costs are rising,” the email said.
“It also leaves a very real opportunity to continue public health restrictions in some program areas and uncertainty about the level of comfort for participants when returning to activities where communication is inevitable.”
According to the RA Center, from a future perspective, it must invest in activities that support the mission of the RA, but that can be enjoyed safely and easily by people of all ages.
“Unfortunately, hockey is not just an expensive business, it was and continues to be declining among the overall participation rates both at RA and nationwide.
