On June 10, Joe Eppolito, a Clayton-based and former Thousand Island hockey coach, has received the Walter Yaciuk Award from the USA Hockey Competition, an annual award for excellence in sports coach training.
Eppolito, who has been involved in teaching hockey at the state and national levels for 27 years, was declared the winner on Wednesday.
“I was respected and humiliated and more than anything else surprised and a little shocked,” Eppolito said in USA Hockey and announced his award.
Eppolito, 62, taught at Thousand Islands High School for 34 years and was a coach for school boys for 30 years and ended in 2016. He started the USA Hockey event in 1994 when he took on a role in the New York State Amateur Hockey Association Initiation Program. coordinator.
Eppolito has served as president of the U.S. Hockey District since 2003, served on the U.S. Hockey Executive Committee, and remains on the board of the State Amateur Hockey Association.
“I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in all sorts of changes in coaching training, all of my goals are to improve hockey coaches and players in the United States,” he said.
Eppolito has also been actively involved in girls ’hockey and has been the coordinator of the national girls’ and women’s championships for the past 20 years.
