It was a strong season for local tennis as singles and doubles players.

The Helena High girls finished second in the AA teams thanks to each other to the double team of Emma Hasquet and Eva Santos.

Their achievement was matched by Regan Hanson of Helena Capital, who advanced to the girls ’AA state championship before being knocked out to Meg McCarthy of Bozeman, who went undefeated on her way to the title.

Hanson’s run in the state tournament was still impressive. She also helped the Bruin girls win and draw in two twins against Helena High this season.

Hanson’s success in the state tournament was matched in a duel by Helena High duo Santos and Hasquet, who fell 6-4, 6-2 in the title race into Bozeman’s tandem.

The Helena duo also made it to the Southern AA division tournament championship and finished second, as did Hanso in the singles.

The post-season results resulted in all three players being honored as the best tennis players on the Independent Record All-Area team.

Three girls: Hanson of Capital, and Santos and Helquet High Hasquet will share the prize, while singles ’best player and double-tandem, Ryan Ashley was the second best performer and arguably the best male player in the region since the Southern AA Division championship. He was also the fourth State Bruins of his freshman season.
