Maray MJ Abarca and Emely Valencia’s Otay Ranch High mixed doubles team can go down in history as the only duo to have won the San Diego Section CIF mixed pair championship.
Abarca and Valencia, both sophomores, gathered from the set drop and won the final three games of the third series with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over secondary Jackson Codd and junior Katie Codd, Canyon Crest Academy, at Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
Just a couple of hours earlier, both teams needed a decisive tie-breaker to reach the championship, including Codd’s siblings 3-6, 6-4 (14-12) semi-final wins from La Jolla Carson Kellogg and Tatum Buffington.
The mixed doubles format was first included in parts of the sports calendar after tennis was first played as a team competition in a team competition due to a pandemic as a result of a revised schedule.
In the top seed match, Westview junior Kaila Barksdale won the girls ’singles title for the second straight season, beating Otay Ranch sophomore Arianne Pepan, 6-2, 6-4.
Canyon Crest Academy team team Alex Atwell and Prneet Varade defeated La Costa Canyons Ian Collins and Jenson Miller 6-2, 6-1 to get the boys ’double value for the episode. The champions shocked the best ranked team of the semis teams.
The junior team of the pair of girls upstairs, Lyna Fowler and Asha Gidwani, defeated teammates Taylor Shimizu and Lillia Finnegan in the 6-0, 6-1 All-Raven final. Fowler won the couple’s title last season (19) with his older sister Emily.
On Tuesday, St. Augustine’s Elder Noah Zamora won the boys ’singles title ahead of Bishop Elder Michael Abagyan, 6-0, 6-1. Zamora recovered from minor injuries to her legs and feet as she crawled out of a crash accident last August.
