After completing a trip all the way to the 5A Lower State Championship, Summerville has demanded some of his areas top marks.
Green Wave singles list player Sam Dimuzio has been named the 8-AAAAA Boy Tennis Player of the Year. Dimuzio swept his opponents in doubles this spring. With his help, Green Wave made progress to the Lower State event, where its season ended in defeat for the then-undefeated Wando.
Sam was just so much fun to watch, especially in the final weeks of the season, Summerville coach Jesse Gladis said. He plays more confidently and much smarter. His athleticism and attraction help him restore the balls, which should never come back. He has become a great leader as an example to his teammates. The player of the year is a huge honor, and I don’t remember the last Summerville player to have it.
Gladis led Summerville to a record of 18-4 this spring. It didn’t go unnoticed by coaches from other regions who voted to nominate Gladis as regional coach of the year.
Summervilles William Wimberly and Edward Naval, who played on the Green Wave throughout the season No. 2 Singles and No. 3 Singles points, was also named to the 2021 Region 8-AAAAA Boys Tennis All-Region Team. All three Green Wave athletes are secondary.
Seniors Daniel Schmedeke and Ryan Daley represent second-place finisher Ashley Ridge on the All-Region Team. Junior Kevaughn Williams and senior Daniel Clayborn represent Fort Dorchester on the team. West Ashley’s younger Cheng Sun also received All-Region honors.
