Two years later, the champions of the state tennis court for the boys of Class 2A remain the same.
After winning his first title as a freshman in 2019 after COVID-19 swept the 2020 season, Mounds View junior Bjorn Swenson successfully defended the individual crown on Friday at Prior Lake High School.
Swenson led the championship match at Edina’s sophomore Matthew Fullerton’s lead 6-2, 6-4. Swenson cruised through the first set and then came together to win the second set when Fullerton had a 4-3 advantage.
Swenson, one of the highest players under the age of 18 in the country, did not drop out of the series in the entire tournament.
At numerous key points, Swenson pumped his fists and gave a powerful, let go!
I’m such a competitive guy. A lot of this comes from my competitiveness, he said. It always comes up on occasion. It’s good. It helps me a lot. It’s a great tool.
In the doubles, Edina’s Otto Schreiner and Luke Westholder held Mounds View’s Emmanuel and Christo Alexia 7-5, 6-4 to get the state title.
CATEGORY A
Breck’s Ishan Nadkarni and Zach Piehl gave the St. Paul Academy tandem Liam Lynch and Luka Shaker-Check 6-1, 6-0 to win the Class A pair title at St. Cloud.
Clayton Haberman completed the Mustang sweep, which also won the team title earlier this week by beating Mound-Westonka’s Jack Linder 6-1, 6-2 by winning the duel state title.
